ARLINGTON, Texas – The Tulsa softball team needed extra innings, but pulled out a 2-1 win over Creighton Sunday with a walk-off single by Haley Henshaw in the bottom of the ninth.
The game was a pitcher’s duel from the beginning, but the Golden Hurricane (10-5) took the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Jill Barrett.
That score held until the top of the sixth, when Creighton got on the board with a lead-off home run by McKenna Setlik to tie the game at 1-1. TU could not score in the bottom of the sixth, sending the game into extra frames.
Both teams got runners to third base in the eighth inning, but neither could capitalize. First Tulsa managed to throw out MaKenzie Michael at the plate to keep the score tied.
The Golden Hurricane loaded the bases with one out, putting it in prime position to win the game. But Creighton first managed to throw out Jessica Stoelke at the plate, and then Samantha Cobb struck out to end the inning.
TU advanced a runner to third base with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth, putting the winning run 90 feet away with one out again. Lauren Menke followed with a strike out, and Henshaw entered as a pinch hitter in the next at-bat. She knocked a single into the outfield to drive home the winning run.
Sunday marked the second time this season a TU game has gone into nine innings, and the Golden Hurricane won both times.
The Hurricane finished the UT Arlington Classic undefeated in five games and has won its last seven straight overall. TU will come back to Tulsa to finally host its first home game of the season at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Oklahoma State.
