PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The sixth-ranked Sooners closed their weekend at the Cathedral City Classic with a 4-2 win over Cal Poly on Saturday.
Michelle Gascoigne came in to pick up the win, pitching 3.2 perfect innings in relief. She improved to 4-3 as she struck out four without allowing a hit, run or walk.
OU starter Allee Allen went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
Cal Poly struck first with a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but it didn’t take long for the Sooners to respond.
In the bottom of the same inning, Destinee Martinez reached first on a bunt, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
With runners on second and third, catcher Jessica Shults recorded her 10th home run of the season to give the Sooners a 3-2 lead. Shults also racked up RBIs 30, 31 and 32 already in the young season.
The Sooners added a run in the bottom of the sixth for good measure.
Oklahoma had been struggling and was desperate for a win after going 0-for-4 in the first four games of the weekend.
The Sooners lost to Georgia and Hawaii on Thursday and then fell to Long Beach State and UCLA on Friday.
After totaling 57 runs last weekend at the Troy Cox Classic, OU had just two runs combined this weekend coming into the game against Cal Poly and finished with six total.
The Sooners (12-5) travel to North Texas for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday.
