TULSA, Oklahoma – Tulsa forward DJ Magley has 61 personal fouls this season through 21 games. Those “undisciplined” mistakes, to borrow a word from Doug Wojcik, limited Magley’s minutes this season.

The 6-foot-9 energetic, rebound machine didn’t see much of the floor early on. Magley fouled out of three out of four games in December and had Wojcik questioning how valuable Magley would be going forward.

Saturday night against UTEP, he hit his stride. Magley scored 10 points on 27 big minutes. He blocked three shots, played great defense and helped carry the load when three starters went to the bench in the first half with, believe it or not, foul troubles.

Magley pulled down seven rebounds and received plenty of praise from his coach in the post game press conference. His effort in the paint helped Tulsa outscore the Miners by 16 points down low. He was a big part of the Golden Hurricane’s 29-4 advantage in bench points.

Magley isn’t a finished product. He still averaged 2.9 fouls in just under 17 minutes per game. But, he’s a guy who gives 100 percent effort every night, and has a chance to be a much-needed spark for the Golden Hurricane as they try to run down Memphis in the standings.
