IOWA CITY, Iowa – Several Iowa media outlets reported Thursday that former University of Iowa running back Brandon Wegher is transferring to Oklahoma.

Wegher saw extensive playing time as a freshman in 2009, setting an Iowa freshman record with eight rushing touchdowns and accounting for 967 all-purpose yards. In the second game of his college career against Iowa State, he rushed for more than 100 yards on only 15 carries.

Wegher was slated as the No. 2 running back on Iowa’s depth chart after spring practices this season, but mysteriously left the team in August and never returned. The Hawkeyes did not release a specific reason for his absence, citing only “personal reasons.”

Wegher requested that Iowa release him from his scholarship in December, which the school granted. It is currently unclear whether he will be on scholarship with the Sooners or will walk on, but he has enrolled in classes.

Wegher will be another addition to an already deep running back corps for the Sooners, joining Roy Finch, Brennan Clay, Jonathan Miller and Jermie Calhoun.
