NORMAN, Oklahoma—The University of Oklahoma baseball team is ranked sixth in the Collegiate Baseball’s top 40 preseason poll.
“We are excited about getting started,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “The last game in Omaha, the 12-inning game, is still our most recent memory on the competitive field. We are looking forward to getting started on a new journey. And although we appreciate the national recognition for our program, we clearly understand that it is not where we start the season, but where we finish.”
The No. 6 ranking is the Sooners highest preseason ranking since 1995 when they were ranked third after winning the 1994 College World Series.
OU returns to the diamond this season after a 50-18 record last season, a second place finish in the Big 12 Conference and the program’s tenth appearance in the College World Series. The Sooners finished the season with a tough 12-inning battle against South Carolina who eventually won the National Championship title.
Overall, five Big 12 schools made the preseason poll with Texas ranked at No. 7, Texas A&M at No. 8, Kansas State at No. 37 and Baylor at No. 39.
The No. 6 ranking marks the third straight season that the Sooners appeared in a preseason listing.
Oklahoma opens the 2011 season Feb 18 against William & Mary in Norman.
