NORMAN, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma Sooners stay perfect with a 6-0 record, putting away Prairie View A&M 78-55 to earn win the Basketball Travelers Invitational.
The No. 11 Sooners’ Danielle Robinson led all scorers with 26 points, while freshman Aaryn Ellenberg posted an impressive 19 points, second-highest between the two teams. Ellenberg’s strong offensive abilities were on full display late in the game, when she posted 12 of her points with just seven minutes left in the game. The late-game hot streak helped the Sooners push ahead for the 23-point win.
OU’s defense didn’t lack either, holding the Panthers (3-2) to only three baskets over a 14-minute stretch, allowing the Sooners to build the margin just before halftime.
Prairie View A&M’s Latia Williams led the Panthers in points, rebounds and assists, posting 14 points, eight rebounds and dishing out five assists. Prairie View showed spurts of success in the beginning of the second half, narrowing the lead to nine points.
Sooners’ head coach Sherri Coale said her team, while young and talented, still has to find their sync.
“It looked like a headless horseman,” Coale said. “Five guys going in five different directions.”
Ellenberg and fellow freshman Morgan Hook both had significant contributions to OU’s win, Hook finishing with nine points. Sophomore Joanna McFarland finished the night with 11 boards, while Lyndsey Cloman posted seven points.
"We've got to get mentally tougher and we have to play every possession hard, regardless of the score," said Robinson, a preseason All-America pick at point guard and the Sooners' senior leader. "We're going to be playing a big game this weekend (at No. 7 Ohio State) and we've got another one Wednesday. We just have to keep getting better."
The Sooners host Sam Houston State December 1 and travel to Ohio State December 5.
