AUSTIN, Texas -- Oklahoma State exercised yet another road demon Saturday with a 33-16 win over the Texas Longhorns.
The win marked the first time the Cowboys have come away from Austin with a victory since 1944. OSU already snapped a decades-long losing streak this season with the road win over Texas Tech in Week 7.
Oklahoma State started the game off moving the ball well, racking up 31 yards on nine plays, but the Texas defense put the clamps on in the red zone and held the Cowboys to a field goal.
After both teams traded field goals – a Mike Davis fumble for Texas and an interception by Weeden – the Longhorns’ Justin Tucker converted on a 37-yard field goal attempt to tie the game 3-3.
Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden settled in and the offense began to click late in the first quarter and continued to move well in the second quarter.
Just 45 seconds into the second quarter, running back Jeremy Smith scored from seven yards out to finish off an 11-play, 63-yard drive. The ensuing point after attempt was blocked, giving Oklahoma State a 9-3 lead, and marked the first missed PAT of Dan Bailey’s career.
The Cowboys’ next drive finished with a 67-yard touchdown strike from Weeden to Justin Blackmon to give the Cowboys a 16-3 lead. With that completion, Weeden passed Mariners pitcher Josh Fields for the Cowboys’ single-season passing record of 3,165. Blackmon’s reception also marked his ninth consecutive touchdown reception this season, another school record.
After holding Texas to a three-and-out, Oklahoma State strung together a six-play, 59-yard drive, capped off by a nine-yard touchdown run by Kendall Hunter to take a 23-3 lead. Bailey tacked on a 45-yard field goal with five seconds left in the half to five the Cowboys a 23-point lead.
Oklahoma State’s offense wasn’t quite as effective in the second half, but still managed to put up enough points to hold off a Texas comeback.
On the Cowboys’ third possession of the second half, Hunter showed why he is one of the most dynamic runners in the country. Weeden connected with him on a screen pass and Hunter broke tackles and moved down the sideline to move the ball to the one-yard line. He scored on the next play to give OSU a 33-3 lead.
Cody Johnson carried Texas in the fourth quarter, racking up 38 of his 68 total yards in the final 15 minutes. He also scored from five yards out early in the second quarter and set up another one-yard touchdown to close the gap to 33-16.
Weeden finished the game 24 yards shy of breaking the Cowboys’ single-game passing record with 409 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception. Hunter quietly amassed 116 yards on 23 carries and found the end zone twice and Blackmon added 145 receiving yards and one touchdown in the win.
OSU retains sole possession of the Big 12 South lead, and controls its own destiny as it travels to Kansas to take on the Jayhawks Nov. 20.
