LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys built an early lead Saturday and rode it to a 34-17 win over Texas Tech, giving OSU its first win in Lubbock since 1944.
After their first drive ended in a three-and-out, the Cowboys turned to their running game to find rhythm on their second drive. Oklahoma State rushed five times for 61 yards – including three rushes by Kendall Hunter for 46 yards – and a touchdown.
Brandon Weeden found his stride on the Cowboys’ next possession, connecting with Tracy Moore and Justin Blackmon for 54 yards setting up a four-yard touchdown run by Joseph Randle.
Two drives later, OSU strung together an eight-play, 82-yard drive – 61 through the air by Weeden – to set up a four-yard touchdown run by former Union standout Jeremy Smith.
The Texas Tech offense came to life in the second quarter and shifted momentum to the home team. In its drive of the quarter, the Red Raiders offense found its pace and orchestrated a 15-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to close the gap to 21-7.
On the Red Raiders’ next drive they used quick snaps and the running game to keep the Oklahoma State defense off balance and string together another scoring drive. Six of the nine plays on the touchdown drive were on the ground, but the third pass was a 28-yard touchdown strike from Taylor Potts to Cornelius Douglas to pull within one touchdown.
The Cowboys closed the half with a 14-play, five-minute, 74-yard drive capped off by a 25-yard Dan Bailey field goal to take a 10-point lead into the locker room.
On the Cowboy’s second possession of the second half, Weeden threaded the needle and connected with Blackmon who took it 62 yards down the sideline for a score.
Blackmon finished the game with 207 yards on 10 receptions, setting his personal-best in receiving yards for the second week in a row.
Hunter quietly racked up 129 yards and a score on 25 carries to pace the running game, while Randle chipped in 95 yards and a touchdown.
The teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter, but the Red Raiders were unable to mount a comeback and dropped their third conference game.
OSU will return to Stillwater for their homecoming game to take on Nebraska, who is coming off a disappointing home loss to the Texas Longhorns.
