TULSA, Oklahoma – The sons of Oklahoma State’s winning-est coach sat next to each other in front of about 50 people Thursday afternoon. Eddie Sutton watched with the rest of the media, family members and friends as Sean joined Scott on the Oral Roberts staff.
For Eddie, it had been a long time coming.
Between the three of them Eddie, Scott and Sean Sutton have 50 years and 1,049 career NCAA basketball wins on their coaching resumes. The trio has amassed more victories than any other father-son combinations to ever set foot on the hardwood.
Sean’s win total looked like it would be stuck at 39 for the foreseeable future. The 42-year-old spent time in Stillwater as the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 2007-08. After leaving the team, he fell into prescription drug addiction and was eventually arrested for illegal possession.
Sean completed three months of drug related rehabilitation and is back in the gym for the first time since his tenure with the Cowboys. Oral Roberts announced on Thursday that he would be joining the program as an unpaid advisor. The opportunity to get his foot back in the door and involved in the sport he loves made Sean’s father well up with pride.
