NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Bob Barry’s 50th year as a broadcaster will be his last.
The longtime football and basketball announcer said that he will retire after the 2010-11 academic year. Barry is the current play-by-play commentator at OU for both sports.
"It's time," he said in the announcement. "I had been thinking about it for a couple years and kind of pointing toward this year as my last. The time just felt right.
"I've been so fortunate and so lucky to have the job I've had. I tell young people all of the time that when you find the thing you love to do, then do it to the best of your ability, it's really not work at all."
Barry initially won a tryout to become football and basketball play-by-play commentator for the Oklahoma Sooners in 1961. He stayed with the Sooners until 1972, when he left to cover Oklahoma State and University of Tulsa games. He returned to OU in 1991 and has remained since.
No announcer has called more Oklahoma Sooners games than Bob Barry.
