TULSA, Oklahoma – The Tulsa Shock’s skid grew to nine games Tuesday with a 101-89 loss to the Connecticut Sun.
The Sun (10-5) led by three points after the first quarter and continued to extend the lead throughout the night, thanks in large part to rebounding and free throws. Connecticut pulled down 32 rebounds on the night to Tulsa’s 16, and made 17 free throws to the Shock’s six.
"I knew coming into this job that it would be difficult," said head coach Nolan Richardson. "I just didn't know how difficult it was going to be."
The Shock (3-12) played relatively well on offense and defeated the Sun in several statistical categories. The teams had nearly identical shooting percentages and Tulsa had more assists and forced more turnovers. But that was not enough to overcome the steep rebounding difference.
Scholanda Robinson led all scorers with 19 points for the Shock, while Kiesha Brown scored 12 and Jennifer Lacy added another 12 off the bench. The Sun had a balanced offensive attack, with five different players scoring at least 16 points. Sandrine Gruda and Kara Lawson led the way with 17 each, and Tan White scored 16 off the bench.
Tulsa still has not won a game since June 4, but will try to get back in the win column in its next game 7 p.m. Saturday against the Washington Mystics.
