CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia --The Oklahoma Sooners lost the opening game of their NCAA Super Regional to the Virginia Cavaliers 3-2 Saturday.
The Cavaliers (50-12) put a run on the board in their first at-bat of the game. Leadoff hitter Phil Gosselin swung at the third pitch he saw and sent it over the left-field fence to take a 1-0 lead.
With two outs on the board in the top of the fifth, Chris Ellison singled to shallow left field to bring Max White home from second to tie the game. The Sooners (47-15) took the lead in the top of the sixth on a White RBI single to left field to take a 2-1 advantage.
It took only two at-bats in the bottom of the sixth for Virginia to retake the lead. After Keith Werman doubled in the first at-bat, Dan Grovatt homered to right to take a 3-2 lead.
Danny Houltzen (10-1) received a win for Virginia after surrendering two earned runs on six hits and striking out nine in eight innings of service. The Sooners got 6.1 innings from Michael Rocha (7-2), who was pulled after giving up five earned runs on five hits.
Oklahoma will try to stay alive in the NCAA Tournament at 3 p.m. Sunday.
