WICHITA, Kansas – The Oral Roberts baseball team made a late push, but could not hold off Wichita State in a 7-6 loss in extra innings Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles (29-24) got on the board first with an RBI by Tyler Garewal, but Wichita State (35-18) responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. ORU took the lead again with an RBI single from Robert Barbosa, but the Shockers responded again with the game’s first big inning.
Will Baez, Ryan Jones and Cody Lassley connected on three consecutive hits that resulted in runs, giving the Shockers their first lead at 4-2. They extended the advantage to three with another run in the fifth, but Oral Roberts would not go away.
Tyler Saladino blasted a two-run home run in the seventh inning, and P.J. Sequeira added a two-run homer of his own later in the frame to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead. ORU could not hold onto the lead, as Lassley added his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
After a scoreless ninth, the teams went into extra innings. The Eagles went down in order in the top of the inning, and Clint McKeever ended things with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th. The loss ends a two-game winning streak for ORU in which it scored more 13 runs both times.
The Eagles with finish their regular season with a three-game series against North Dakota State starting at 7 p.m. Thursday.
