OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma State Cowgirls were shut out 5-0 by Missouri in the opening round of the Big 12 Softball Championship. OSU is eliminated from the tournament with the loss and finishes with a 43-14 record on the season.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth. Lindsay Muller hit a two-run single to right to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Ashley Fleming followed that up with a three-run home run to right center to put Missouri on top 5-0. The Tigers doubled the Cowgirls hit total 8-4.
OSU attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh. The Cowgirls had two on with two outs but could not convert as Chelsea Garcia popped out to second base to end the game. Oklahoma State did not have any extra-base hits and did not advance a runner past second base.
Anna Whiddon (21-8) was tagged with the loss for the Cowgirls after giving up three earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. Kat Espinosa pitched 2/3 innings of relief but allowed two earned runs.
Jana Hainey threw a complete game shutout and earned the win for the Tigers. Missouri will play Texas at 7:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the championship game.
