DES MOINES, Iowa -- Oklahoma City dropped a 4-2 series-opening decision to Iowa Friday.
The RedHawks scored the first two runs of the game in the first and second innings. Esteban German crossed the plate first to give Oklahoma City a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. German drove in the second RedHawks run in the next inning to put his team on top 2-0.
Iowa did its damage in back-to-back innings as well. Micah Hoffpauir hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to even the game at 2-2.
Matt Camp hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead.
The RedHawks had a prime opportunity in the top of the ninth but could not capitalize. Oklahoma City had two runners on with one out but did not convert. Brandon Boggs struck out swinging while Emerson Frostad struck out on a foul tip.
Michael Ballard (2-1) took the loss for the RedHawks after giving up four earned runs in 5.2 innings.
Jeff Samardzija (2-0) earned the win for the Cubs after throwing two scoreless innings.
The teams are back in action for game two at 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
