STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- It took 12 innings to decide a winner between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Kansas Jayhawks.
A single by Davis Duren in the bottom of the 12th inning hit home Nico Rosthenhausler to earn OSU an 8-7 win over KU. Both teams utilized four pitchers in the extra-inning game, with the Cowboys’ Andrew Heaney (3-1) earning the win. The lefty threw the last 1.1 innings, giving up two hits while striking out two batters. Junior Brad Propst started the game, pitching for the first 7.2 innings. He gave up five hits while striking out three hitters.
Wally Marciel (1-1) finished with the loss for the Jayhawks. He gave up three hits and struck out two batters in his 1.1 innings on the mound. Senior Cameron Selik started for Kansas, pitching seven innings. He gave up six hits, including a homer by Duren in the third inning.
The Cowboys posted the first two runs of the game, one coming in the second inning off a triple by Josh Botts which hit home Rosthenhausler. Duren followed up in the next inning with his fifth home run of the season to put the Pokes up 2-0.
Neither team was able post any scoring until the fifth inning, when the Jayhawks put up five runs.
Propst struggled against Kansas, hitting Jake Marasco with a wild pitch to send him to first. He walked the next batter, James Stanfield. Brett Lisher grounded out and the Cowboys pitcher managed to strike out the next hitter, Brandon Macias. Propst’s troubles didn’t stop there though. He walked Robby Price to load the bases. Brian Heere singled to center field, as Stanfield and Marasco both scored.
Right handed Ian McCarthy relieved Propst, but the Jayhawks managed to post three more runs to take the lead 5-2.
Oklahoma State battled back in the bottom of the ninth inning, when they posted three more runs to tie the game. Both teams posted two runs in the 11th, as the game extended to the 12th and final inning.
The Cowboys’ win tied up the three game series. The tie-breaker will begin Sunday at 1 p.m.
