STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Former Oklahoma State tackle Russell Okung visited the Washington Redskins Monday, and agent Peter Shaffer said the meeting went very well.
“Russell said the meeting was fantastic, and my conversations [with Washington’s staff] said he was a wonderful young man who is everything you want in a football player,” Shaffer said. “He enjoyed meeting the staff, the coaches, the tour, it was all positive.”
Okung is commonly considered to be among the best offensive tackles available in this year’s NFL Draft, and the Redskins hold the No. 4 pick.
Washington made waves earlier in the week by trading for veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb from the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. With such an experienced signal caller now under center, the Redskins will likely be looking for blockers to help protect him.
Shaffer said he does not know where his client will end up being selected, but that whoever does pick Okung will solidify their line for years to come.
“We don’t have the luxury of drafting players, that’s up to the teams,” Shaffer said. “So the teams can select anybody they want. The only thing we believe is that Russell is going to make a fine professional and at the end of the day, when people look back at this draft, he’ll be the best offensive player in the draft.”
Shaffer said Okung has now visited a total of six teams, but did not share which six. Okung’s most likely competition for the No. 1 tackle in the draft comes in the form of former OU standout Trent Williams. The NFL Draft will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 22.
