STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys fell Wednesday to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, 10-7.
The Cowboys (15-7) fell behind early, as the Eagles (15-9) got on the board in the top of the first inning.
Stephen Wickens doubled down the right field line, while Mikel Alvarez took first base after being walked on the following at bat. Tim Roberson singled, loading the bases with Wickens on third and Alvarez advancing to second.
Zach Maxfield singled to right field, hitting home both Wickens and Alvarez. Austin Gaines came to bat with the Eagles ahead 2-0, Roberson on third and Maxfield on first. Gaines reached first, but Maxfield was thrown out at second. Roberson was hit home, putting Florida Gulf Coast ahead 3-0.
The Cowboys couldn’t respond in the bottom of the first, but chipped away at the Eagles later in the game.
OSU got on the board with a homerun by Mark Ginther. The Pokes tacked four more runs on the bottom of the sixth.
Tom Belza singled to center field, reaching second after Ginther hit a pop fly to left field. Nico Rosthenhaus tripled to right center field, sending Belza home. Rosthenhaus then scored after Patrick Nathanson threw a wild pitch. Luis Uribe singled to right field, and was hit home after Kevin Chambers doubled to center field. Jack Wagoner relieved Nathanson at the mound. On the next at-bat, Harvard singled, hitting Chambers home to end the inning 5-3.
The Eagles tied it back up 5-5 in the top of the seventh, after Gaines homered to left field, hitting home Alvarez, who was on second.
Matt Klein came in to pitch for Trevor Walch, but Brain Denneny relieved Klein after he threw a wild pitch, hitting FGCU’s Mike Reeves and advancing Luke Smeirciak to second base.
With Denneny at the mound, Curtis Mullaney singled to right field, as Pete Woodworth, pinch running for Reeves, advanced to second and Smierciak scored.
The Eagles reclaimed their once again, 6-5.
Denneny threw a wild pitch, hitting Joe Guarnaccia, as Mullaney advanced to second and Woodworth moved to third.
Brad Propst took the mound to relieve Denneny.
In the top of the eighth, Roberson reached first on a single. Maxfield homered on the next at-bat, putting the Eagles up 8-5.
Gaines was walked by Propst, who was relieved by Peck. Smierciak tripled to center, sending Gaines home. Smierciak was then hit home by Chester, who singled up the middle.
Florida Gulf Coast led the Cowboys 10-5 going into the ninth and final inning.
The Cowboys didn’t give up though. Eagle’s pitcher R.J. Brown faced loaded bases after walking both Chambers and Harvard. He hit Davis Duren on the next pitch, to load the bases. Walker singled to center field, as both Chambers and Harvard home to earn the Pokes two runs.
The Cowboys ended the two-game series 1-1 against the Eagles. OSU hosts Nebraska Friday at 6:30 p.m.
