NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Oklahoma inched itself close to UConn on Monday night, leading the game at one point, but the top-ranked Huskies earned their 65th-consecutive win, 76-60.
The Huskies got out to a quick start and built a 10-point lead against the Sooners. While OU was able to land some shots, it was UConn which set the tone.
UConn’s confidence faltered late in the first half, as the Sooners took control of the tempo of the game.
OU inched closer to the Huskies, capitalizing off 10 UConn turnovers in the first half. Following an OU timeout with seven minutes left on the clock, the Sooners turned up the intensity to come within 2 points of the Huskies by halftime.
The first few minutes of the second half were neck-and-neck play, both teams scrambling for the lead.
While the Sooners’ bench ran out of steam, the Huskies switched into high gear.
UConn’s shooting was off much of the game prior to halftime, but the Huskies came out with hot hands to pull ahead by 10 points with 10 minutes left on the clock.
UConn held the lead for the remainder of the game, extending it by 16 points by the end of the second half. It was the eighth time UConn has beaten the Sooners.
Conneticut’s Maya Moore earned a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Tina Charles finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
OU’s Danielle Robinson ended the night with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. Teammate Amanda Thompson finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Sooners travel to Manhattan, Kansas Sunday to face the Kansas State Wildcats. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
