NORMAN, Oklahoma – Oklahoma punter Tress Way was named to the Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America Wednesday.

Way ranked third in the nation with a 45.7-yard average per punt this season, the highest among freshmen. Oklahoma State’s Quinn Sharp was second among freshman punters with a 45.1-yard average.

Way’s breakthrough performance came in OU’s last game of the regular season against OSU. He punted six times for a total of 353 yards, an NCAA record of 58.8 yards per punt. He became the only Sooner to ever have five punts of more than 50 yards in the same game.

The Tulsa native was one of three Big 12 players named to the Freshman All-America Team, joining Kansas offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson and Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith.
