Sims Steps Up

TULSA, Oklahoma-- Kenny D. Sims has played just about every position in the Tulsa secondary. The senior started the year at corner but moved to free safety after a season-ending injury to fellow senior Charles Davis. Sims started two games in 2007 at free safety, and it is his experience that is helping him make the transition once again.

“I guess it’s easier now that I’ve been here four year,” Sims said. “I’ve got a better understanding for the game and more comfortable back there when I was a freshman.”

TU coach Todd Graham said he counted just one blown coverage against Sam Houston State. The Golden Hurricane held the Bearkats to just 100 yards passing and no touchdowns, thanks in large part to Sims aligning the defense.

“I'm real proud of Kenny Sims moving over to safety and his play.” Graham said.

Sims physical change to safety has to come with a mental change as well. But that switch may be the most difficult part.

“It’s different for a mindset,” Sims said. “As a corner you’re kinda doing your own thing, like you got a guy man-to-man or playing zone. Whereas free safety you’re like a quarterback on defense, you got to know what everybody else is doing, and help get everybody else lined up. It’s a very vital position to the secondary.”
