TULSA, Oklahoma -- We're in the heart of severe weather season and having a weather radio is one of the best ways to stay alert to threatening weather. Now there's a way to get the power of a weather radio and the News On 6 Warn Team forecast in the palm of your hand.
Thursday, May 19 is Free Weather Radio Day, and if you've got an iPhone, you can get the iMapWeather Radio App in partnership with the News On 6 for free until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19.
Normally, it will cost you $10.
The Weather Radio App uses your phone's GPS to alert you to any watch or warning for your exact location. If a warning is issued, you'll hear an alarm go off, followed by a description of the warning, especially helpful for waking you up at night in case of severe weather.
If you're on the road, the app will notify you immediately if you've driven into harm's way.
You can even set up alerts for up to five stationary locations in case you want to keep family and friends ahead of a storm.
On top of the weather alerts, you can get real-time traffic information along with the latest News On 6 forecast.
It's a simple tool that could save your life and is free for a short time only.
To get the app on your iPhone, just go to the app store and search for "iMap Weather Radio." You can also text "radio" to 79640 for a link to the downloaded page.
Our team is working hard on apps for the Android and hopes to roll out not only the Weather Radio App but the News On 6 App and the News On 6 Weather App very soon. Keep checking Newson6.com, and we will let you know as soon as they are ready!
