Snow Storms Set New Tulsa Weather Records

TULSA, Oklahoma -- Three significant winter storm events in February, 2011, set a slew of new records for Tulsa.

"We broke the all-time record for winter snow at 26.1 inches," said News On 6 Chief Meteorologist Travis Meyer.

The previous record of 25.6 inches was set in 1923-24.

"We blew that out of the water by a considerable sum," he said.

February was also the snowiest month on record ever in Tulsa with 22.5 inches. Wednesday's storm added 5.7 inches to the Tulsa tally.

Wednesday's snow totals:

"Ground zero" for Wednesday's storm was Jay with 25 inches, Meyer said. Kenwood was next with 24 inches. Big Cabin weighed in at 21 inches and Barnsdall with 20 inches. Pawhuska and Pryor both received 18 inches of snow.

This winter is the second time in the last three years that Tulsa has set records for snow and cold. Last winter's total was 22.8 inches.

"To me that's really significant," Meyer said. Meyer said that although people advance different theories for why the last few years have been so cold, he believes it is a natural cycle.

"Changes occur naturally through time," he said. Some decades are known for being particularly dry or wet. It appears the 2010s may be known for cold and snow.
