PONCA CITY, Oklahoma -- A 7-year-old Ponca City boy is dead after he was struck while riding  his skateboard on a Kay County road Thursday.

The crash occurred at 6:20 p.m. Thursday about 1.5 miles west of Ponca City.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the boy, Nathaniel Mason, was sitting on his skateboard going west on North Avenue.

The OHP says Gerald Hawkins of Ponca City was driving a 2006 Chevy, also westbound, when he saw the boy and tried to stop.

Troopers say Hawkins' vehicle left 45 feet of skid marks.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
