Much Of Northeastern Oklahoma Under Winter Storm Warning

TULSA, Oklahoma – Snow has arrived in Green Country overnight.  A winter storm warning has been issued for much of northeastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas starting Wednesday evening.

The warning, in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday, includes Adair, Cherokee, Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Nowata, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Tulsa, Wagoner, Washington, and Rogers counties.

News On 6 Meteorologist Dick Faurot said the front, moving in from the northwest, will bring precipitation that will be changing over to snow and will move into the Interstate 44 corridor by 10 or 11 p.m. Wednesday.

"There are very few things that qualify as lead pipe cinches when it comes to Oklahoma weather, but if we do not have a blanket of snow across much of the state by Noon Thursday, I will be very surprised," he said.

"That will be quickly spreading to the southeast across the rest of Eastern Oklahoma with widespread snow falling through the early morning hours and ending from west to east by late morning or early afternoon at the latest," Faurot said.

"In fact, for Tulsa it appears that the bulk of the snow will fall between the hours of midnight and noon."

Watch Six in the Morning beginning at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, with extra live crews and storm trackers covering the state and of course reporting the latest school closings.

Amounts of snow are harder to predict, Faurot said.

"Again, this is no lead pipe cinch but I would expect a widespread blanket of 2-4 inches and local amounts which could exceed 6" with the heaviest amounts north and progressively lighter amounts to the south," he said.

The system is expected to move out of the region by mid-day Thursday, with the high temperature only expected to reach 23 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to rebound into the 40's for the weekend; however, another winter event may be shaping up for Sunday.
