LEFLORE COUNTY, Oklahoma -- People across the southeastern United States witnessed a meteor flying through the sky Tuesday night, and some believe it impacted in Oklahoma.
Authorities in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma both say they've received numerous reports of a bright light -- possibly a meteor -- passing over the area, although they're not sure where it might have landed.
The meteor, which was visible from the Oklahoma panhandle to the Florida panhandle, reportedly struck the ground in LeFlore County near Poteau Mountain at about 8:30 p.m.
Sheriff's dispatchers on both sides of the state line say they received calls about the light Tuesday night.
TheWeatherSpace.com posted a photo it said it had received from a man claiming to have photographed the meteor as it streaked over southeastern Oklahoma. Later in the day it contacted NewsOn6.com to ask us to replace that photo with one purported to have been taken in Little Rock, Arkansas. That's the photo now accompanying this story.
