TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa firefighters responded to a fire at the city's trash-to-energy plant Monday evening.

Tim Smallwood, with the Tulsa Fire Department, said witnesses reported the flames about 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Covanta Energy Resource Recovery Facility.

Witnesses told firefighters they could see flames coming from the second and third stories.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the trash pit inside the facility.

"It's a pretty good size pit," said Smallwood. "Really deep, a couple of stories high, so its quite a bit of trash inside."

Smallwood said firefighters were putting as much water on the fire as they could while the facility used to a truck to move the trash around.

The fire department said they will remain on scene for several hours.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
