Vinita Firefighters Battle Hay Barn Fire Near Rodeo Grounds

VINITA, Oklahoma -- Vinita firefighters battled a fire at a hay barn located near the Vinita Sale Barn Wednesday night.

The barn is near the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo on Illinois Avenue near the Interstate 44 toll booth exit.

Vinita native Amanda Gray was having dinner with her family at about 6 p.m. and saw the fire trucks rolling out.

"It's just the hay barn, so they couldn't really put it out," she said. "They're just trying to contain it."

Gray said the wind caused a few problems, blowing sparks and starting a few smaller fires. Firefighters quickly put them out, however.

"There's normally a sale there on Wednesdays, but there wasn't today - I guess because of the holidays," Gray said.

The hay barn was believed to be empty, and no injuries had been reported as of about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
