OHP: Boy Drowns At Lake Fort Gibson

A 7-year-old boy drowned Saturday in Lake Fort Gibson at Sequoyah State Park in Cherokee County.

WAGONER, OK -- A 7-year-old boy drowned Saturday in Lake Fort Gibson at Sequoyah State Park in Cherokee County.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports the victim is Jason Christian Pankiewicz of Wagoner.

Pankiewicz had been swimming with his brother and two other friends, according to OHP. He left the water and returned to the camp ground. OHP reported it's not clear when the boy returned to the water before being found floating face-down in the lake at about 10:45 p.m. He was found near the shore by a passing jet ski operator, according to OHP.

The boy was transported to Wagoner Community Hospital by Cherokee County EMS.

OHP reports the cause of death is under investigation.
