COWETA---Today marks a milestone in the growth of Coweta, Oklahoma. The opening of the newly expanded underpass on Highway 72 (Broadway) brings access to downtown Coweta into the 21st century.
‘If you drove a car in Coweta, Oklahoma you had to deal with this,' said Mayor Rob Morton, ‘the lanes were wide enough for Model-Ts and buggies and that kind of thing.'
Built originally around 1905 when the railroad came to Coweta, the underpass was only 13 feet tall and limited access of trucks, school busses and emergency vehicles.
The rehabilitation of the underpass had been a permanent agenda item for the city council, many members of which were on hand today for the opening.
The underpass had been closed for the repair work since February 2009.
