TULSA, OK -- Tulsa Police are working to gain the Hispanic community's trust. Officers hit the streets this week, talking with people and passing out posters near 21st and Garnett.

The police department says information is the best way to break down the barriers that exist between law enforcement and the community. The posters include basic crime prevention tips as well as a special, non-emergency phone number that's answered in Spanish.

"We are not the immigration police. We don't care about your immigration status," said Major Paul Williams of the Tulsa Police Department. "If you're the victim of a crime, we still want you to come and report to us and be comfortable that we're going to solve that crime and keep you from being a victim again."

Tulsa Police say criminals know the Hispanic community is generally reluctant to report a crime and count on that.
