Oklahoma Traffic Fatalities Down In January, 2010

UNDATED -- Department of Public Safety officials report a significant decrease in traffic fatalities for the month of January, 2010. There were 25 traffic fatalities in January of 2010, down 27 from last year's January total of 52.

There was one motorcyclist and tw pedestrians who died in crashes during January. The highest daily fatality numbers include seven deaths on Thursdays, dropping to six on Saturdays.

There were 16 deathless days in the month of January.

Six of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related, in the opinion of the investigating state, county or municipal officer.

All 25 fatality victims were Oklahoma residents. There were 16 male and nine female victims.

Five of the fatality victims were age 20 or under. The leading number of fatalities by age group were five in the 21- to 30-year-olds group dropping to four in the 31- to 40-years-olds and four in the 41- to 50-year-olds.

Pottawatomie County led the state in fatalities with a fatality count of four dropping to three in McClain County.

Seventy-five percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash, according to DPS statistics.

There were 24 fatality crashes in the month of January. The highest number of fatality crashes were on State Highways and County Roads with seven each.
