TULSA, OK -- It's always a good day when you can stop for a sweet treat. Saturday, January 23 is National Pie Day.

Merritt's Bakery celebrated the holiday with $5 off of their pies. The bakery says the origin of National Pie Day is a little bittersweet.

"It originally started with everybody's New Year resolution and it's like three weeks after New Years and people have already started getting away from their New Year's resolution, but you know, all is good in moderation," said Jamie Calkins, Merritt's Bakery.

Some fun facts about pie include:

  • Apple pie is the favorite flavor of one in four Americans, followed by pumpkin, chocolate, lemon meringue and cherry.
  • The average American eats 6 slices of pie a year.
  • 1 in 5 Americans have eaten an entire pie by themselves.
  • 90% of Americans believe that a slice of pie represents one of the simple pleasures in life.
