TULSA, OK -- Two women dressed in bikinis braved the cold Thursday to pass out vegetarian sandwiches downtown.

With temperatures hovering around 17 degrees, and wind-chills around 2 degrees, Kristina Addington and Brittany Haggarty, the PETA ‘Lettuce Ladies', encouraged Tulsans to adopt a vegan diet by handing ToFurkey sandwiches.  ToFurkey is a tofu product made to taste like turkey.

"I had to look twice," said Chris Blackwell.  "I didn't know what they were doing. They have to be real cold as they have very little clothing on."

Addington and Haggerty also spoke with people about cruelty towards animals, a conversation whose irony wasn't lost on Kathy Dean.

"It's very cold, if the sun wasn't out it would just be dismal out here," said Dean.  "It would be just inhumane to have people out here handing out vegan burgers, that's almost crazy, isn't it? They're doing this for the animal rights and yet they have these people freezing out here!"

"We're more than happy to be out here in the cold for an hour, talking to people about adopting a vegan diet," said Kristina Addington, Campaign Coordinator for PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The Tulsa chill sent the bikini-clad duo scurrying for warmth after about 24 minutes.
