Snowfall Causing Power Outages Across State

UNDATED -- Severe winter weather is causing power outages across the metro along with damage and road closures.  I-40 eastbound at US81 in Canadian County has been shut down due to numerous weather related accidents.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has also closed I-40 eastbound at the weigh station near US-281 due to a 15 to 20 car pile-up. They are not expected to reopen the roadway for a few hours.

Showcase Antiques in Chickasaw is reporting their roof blown off due to high winds.

There are also reports of wind damage to Christmas decorations around Norman.

Power outages have been reporting in Yukon, Shawnee, north OKC, central OKC, Moore and Ardmore and NE Oklahoma. Track and report power outages with OG&E and PSO.

Update from the Electric Cooperatives shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday.

Significant progress was made by crews from several electric cooperatives across the state to restore electric service to as many customers as possible today, following one of the worst December snowfalls in Oklahoma history.

As of 8:30 this evening, the following Electric Cooperatives are reporting these outages:

Caddo Electric Cooperative, Binger:  Less than 250 outages

Cimarron Electric Cooperative, Kingfisher: 2 outages; should have both on by late this evening

Cookson Hills Electric Cooperative, Stigler:  3 line outages for a total of approximately 70 consumer-outages

Kiamichi Electric Cooperative, Wilburton: Less than 15 consumer-outages

Kiwash Electric Cooperative, Cordell: Less than 50 consumer-outages; more than 30 poles broken due to high winds

Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Norman: Less than 50 consumer-outages; deep drifts being reported on many roadways, causing limited access in some areas.

Rural Electric Cooperative, Lindsay:  Less than 25 outages

Southwest Rural Electric Association, Tipton: Approximately 500 consumer-outages remain, mostly in the Tipton and Navajo substation areas. Power was restored at 8:30 p.m. this evening to the Frederick substation, and some backfeeding will be possible to restore service to several hundred customers in the Tipton area later tonight. Some consumers being served from the Tipton and Navajo substations will not have power restored until sometime tomorrow.

Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Vinita: Less than 25 consumer-outages remain, down from 130 earlier this afternoon.

KAMO Power, Vinita: No known transmission or substation outages at this time.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, Anadarko: The Frederick substation had power restored at 8:30 p.m. Tipton and Navajo substations will most likely have power restored tomorrow. At least 14 high-voltage transmission structures were destroyed by high winds in the Tipton area. WFEC has lost more than 20 such structures system-wide today.

As of 8:30 p.m., total Electric Cooperative outages from those reporting are less than 1,500.
