OWASSO, OK -- Most people have heard of eBay, but not so many a web site called Etsy.
It's a site that features homemade products and craft supplies and an Owasso single mom discovered it while looking for an ultra-mild laundry detergent.
This entire little adventure began when Jessica McCarty, a single mom from Owasso, started searching for a mild detergent for her daughter Madison who has very sensitive skin.
"Someone suggested homemade laundry detergent, so I spent two weeks on line going through recipe after recipe after recipe," said Jessica McCarty.
It involves hand grating - with a cheese grater - bars of the purest soap, then adding Borax and washing soda. McCarty says the stuff is sensational.
"I can use a tablespoon of this stuff to wash an entire load of clothes," McCarty said.
She says the reason the a just a little of the laundry soap works so well is that there are no fillers.
It is all soap and laundry boosters, she said. “That's what Borax is; it's a laundry booster."
So where do you buy this homemade laundry soap? That's the other interesting aspect to this story - you find it on line at a site called Etsy.
It's like eBay, but it's not - it's eBay for homemade, vintage, and craft supplies. Owasso single mom Jessica McCarty found Etsy searching for ingredients for her detergent and is now using it to sell her homemade product to others.
Her page is called Green Clean, and it’s working.
“I have people from Europe buying from me," McCarty said.
Is it expensive? She says if you figure it per load, it’s not.
"Theirs’ can cost anywhere from 23 cents a load to 57 cents a load; mine breaks down with a normal washer - breaks down to 17 cents a load," she said.
What does Madison thinks of it, since this all started with her anyway?
“Cheese,” Madison said.
That must be good.
