World War II Vet Finds New Mission At Walmart

TULSA, OK -- An Oklahoman who flew over the Pacific Ocean in World War II has found a new mission on Veterans Day.

High-flying heroics have given way to imaginary sword fights with would-be pirates, and the joy of passing out smiley face stickers.

It's Veterans Day and Bob Vail is manning his post at the entrance to a South Tulsa Walmart at 109th and Memorial, saying “hi” and giving the kids smiley face stickers.

The News On 6 went to talk with Bob Vail about his service as a Navy fighter pilot in World War II, but found he's pretty famous for what he does now -- customers have really taken to him.

The News On 6 asked Vail about his Distinguished Flying Cross. He said he got that for sinking the Japanese battleship Hyuga.

"We caught it in a bay and we sank it. We got the DFC for that," said Bob Vail.

Vail showed our crew a DFC, a couple of air medals, his diploma from flight school, a picture of his plane and his squadron's insignia. Veterans Day brings back memories.

"You automatically recall the things you've been through," said Vail.

Vail said you also think of friends you've had and friends you've lost. His battles now are more good natured, like a playful sword fight with a customer. Vail says this is the most enjoyable job ever, and has even learned a thing or two.

"I've arrived at the conclusion, most women love to flirt, so I let them practice on me," said Vail.

It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.
