BARTLESVILLE, OK -- Healthy food that doesn't taste like tree bark: that was the goal three years ago when the Rolling Pin opened in downtown Bartlesville.
"It's very loud," said Susan Miller as she turned on the wheat grinder.
This is real from scratch baking; she grinds the wheat to make her own flour. They grind it every day.
"You grind it the day you make it, the bread will stay fresh longer," Miller said.
Some folks bought a loaf of the Rosemary Olive bread, one of the daily specials. They liked
the fact the bread was still warm, and they liked the cinnamon rolls.
Susan took us back to the kitchen to make some cinnamon rolls. She cut off a slice of her honey wheat bread made with the fresh ground wheat, honey, oil, yeast and water.
"My new mission in life is to get people to eat healthier," Rolling Pin owner Susan Miller said.
She got called up front for something so I figured why wait, I could start eating healthier right now. I tried some of the bread.
Back in the kitchen Susan said she taught elementary school for 20 years. She'd always loved cooking and baking so this seemed to be a natural next thing to do.
"Baking bread is therapeutic," Miller said.
For her and for the people who get to eat it!
The same dough makes great cinnamon rolls. Add lots of cinnamon, roll it up and look at that - dental floss to cut the dough.
"Because it keeps the slice nice and straight," Susan said.
A dentist would be so happy, the food gets flossed before you eat it.
The Rolling Pin is across the street from Bartlesville City Halll. It's open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
