PRYOR, OK -- Pryor's most wanted fugitive is now one of 'America's Most Wanted.' Pryor Police say Alfonso Mondragon killed his ex-girlfriend five years ago, then disappeared.
The cold case will now be featured on a national television show. Pryor police hope this new-found exposure leads to a long-awaited arrest in Pryor's only unsolved homicide.
Murder is not something that happens often in Pryor. But it did back in October 2004 - that's when the body of Shelly Huffman was found.
She was babysitting several children when police say she was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend, Alfonso Mondragon. The suspect took off and has not been seen since.
Investigators believe he's traveling back and forth between Texas and Mexico.
"He is coming back into the states," said Sgt. Brent Crittenden of the Pryor Police Department. "He's been in the Texas area we know of. We don't know if he's made it all the way back to Oklahoma, but he is crossing the border."
With the five-year anniversary of the murder approaching, Sergeant Brent Crittenden decided to contact 'America's Most Wanted.'
To his surprise, the show was interested in the case, and will feature it in a segment later this year.
"How much will that help being featured on a national program?" asked Crittenden. "I hope it helps a lot. I hope we get him behind bars where he needs to be."
Crittenden says Mondragon is 5'11", 180 pounds and now 34 years old. The middle finger on his right hand is deformed, and he has a lazy eye.
And in a town with only one unsolved homicide on its books, investigators are eager to bring that number back to zero.
"It's real important," said Pryor Police Sergeant Brent Crittenden. "I'd like to close the books on this one. I'd like to get him behind bars and make this one history."
Anyone with any information on the case can call the Pryor Police Department at 918-825-1212.
