OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- State Corporation Commission officials are participating in an effort to make sure consumers are informed about telephone options under the Lifeline and Linkup telephone programs.
This week is National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness week.
"September 14 - 20 has been designated as the first-ever National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness week by NARUC," explained Bennett Abbott, Telecommunications Chief for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. "Given the programs now available to low-income consumers, no one should be without telephone service in this day and age. However, recent studies have shown many consumers who qualify are not participating in these programs."
The Lifeline and Link-Up programs were created by Congress provide low cost phone installation and service to qualified consumers.
In a news release from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, the state of Oklahoma has some additional programs called Enhanced Lifeline and Enhanced Link-Up, which can lower the cost further.
The benefits extend to both wired phone service and cellular phone service.
To find out which phone service providers are participating in the program, go to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission's web site and click on the Lifeline/Linkup link, or call the Commission's Consumer Services Division at 1-800-522-8154.
