NOWATA, OK -- A man walking on the railroad tracks just south of the city of Nowata was struck by a freight train early Wednesday morning.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the incident happened at 12:03 a.m. on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Troopers say the victim, a 43-year-old Steve Hindman of Delaware, was walking southbound when he was struck by a southbound freight train.  The impact knocked Hindman 50 feet.

Hindman was flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition.  Authorities don't know why he was walking on the tracks.
