TPS Dropping Charter School Lawsuit

TULSA, OK - The Tulsa Board of Education voted on Monday to lift the district's moratorium on charter school applications and to halt the lawsuit against the Oklahoma Charter School Association.

The lawsuit, filed in 2007, claimed that Oklahoma's 1999 charter school law violates the Oklahoma Constitution's provision against local laws.  The district was challenging the law's requirement that only Tulsa and Oklahoma County districts with more than 5,000 students are required to consider the applications.

The vote by board members at the special meeting was unanimous.

The board felt it was in the best interest of all TPS students to drop the lawsuit in order to focus on other upcoming initiatives, including Teach For America which will bring 50 new educators into the district this fall.
