UNDATED -- The Oklahoma State Department of Health Monday reported six new confirmed cases of swine flu. This brings the number of confirmed cases in Oklahoma to 20.
The cases were confirmed by the OSDH Public Health Laboratory. OSDH officials say the cases include people reporting flu-like illness from April 23 through May 7.
Many of the cases have recovered. The new case confirmations include the following:
• Tulsa County, two children
• Payne County, adult female
• Kay County, teen female
• Cleveland County, male adult
• Canadian County, male adult
The OSDH anticipates there will be additional cases of the new virus reported in the days ahead because they say Oklahomans have little to no immunity against it. For those who have medical conditions that put them at risk of complications from influenza, officials say the disease could be serious.
Beginning Tuesday, the OSDH will begin posting case confirmations on its web site daily at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. As the outbreak continues, confirmations will only be posted after the patient and health care provider have been alerted and a public health investigation has begun.
