NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

The east continued to sizzle with high pressure bringing record high temperatures for the fourth day in a row to some areas. Most of the new records were set in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia and some include: Williamsport (94), Avoca (93), Syracuse (91), Binghamton (89), Elkins (88) and Erie, (88). The highs at Avoca, Pennsylvania and Binghamton, New York were new April records. Detroit, Michigan tied a record high of 84 and this was the third day out of the last four that they tied the old record.

In the central United States, a slow moving cold front brought rain and thunderstorms from the western Great Lakes through the central Mississippi Valley and southern Plains. There werent nearly as many severe reports as this past weekend but large hail and damaging winds were reported in a few storms from southeastern Kansas to southern Texas.

A couple small tornadoes were reported across eastern Texas with one destroying a home near Yorktown. Although severe storms were minimal, storms continued to dump heavy rain over areas that have seen a lot of rain in recent days. Many rivers and streams from northern Oklahoma through eastern Kansas, Missouri, southern Iowa and northern Illinois were exceeding their banks on Monday.

Across the west, an upper-level trough brought rain and snow to much of the Pacific Northwest. Snow was increasing by days end over northern Idaho and northwest Montana where winter storm warnings were posted for additional snow into the overnight. Much more snow will fall across these same areas during the next few days. Light rain and mountain snow showers across portions of Colorado and Wyoming mostly dissipated by early afternoon. Dry weather was experienced from California to the four corners region with near normal temperatures.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1928, a late season snowstorm brought record snows to much of the Central Appalachians with 35 inches at Bayard, WV, 31 inches for Somerset, PA and 30 inches to Grantsville, MD. A train from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia was blocked by snow for two days.

In 1987, a heat wave in the southern and western US brought record highs to twenty cities. The high temperatures of 95 at Houston, TX and Lake Charles, LA as well as the 94 at Port Arthur, TX were all April records.

In 1990, thunderstorms moving across the southeastern US produced several severe warnings with over 100 reports of large hail and damaging winds. Four people were injured when a tornado moved through Inman, SC.
