A Great Loss
It is with a heavy heart I write this week's blog. My friend and fellow breast cancer survivor, Rusti Love, has died. She was an amazing woman who loved life and fought her disease with great passion. I feel it's important to share a little about Rusti in hopes her battle might help others.
I first met Rusti about 12 years ago when I was doing a story about young women with breast cancer. She was undergoing chemotherapy but you'd never know it to look at her! She had the most beautiful dark red hair. I was soon made aware that it was a wig, as Rusti shared her story of losing her hair during chemo. Her eyes sparkled, though, as she told me about her fight. Cancer had picked the wrong gal to mess with!
During our interview, Rusti strummed on a guitar and sang a few songs. Music was her gift and she shared it generously with others. It also gave her the opportunity to share with others about breast cancer. Her story touched many lives including mine. Over the years, our paths frequently crossed and every time we spoke, she never complained or asked "why me." Her positive, upbeat spirit was, in my opinion, what helped her survive for so long.
The last time I saw Rusti was at the Tulsa State Fair last fall. While her voice was strong, there was something in her eyes that showed she was tired of fighting. Now, her battle is over... she's in a much better place, free of pain and no longer having to deal with doctors and treatments and the uncertainty. I know many people are sad right now, but we can take some comfort in knowing Rusti is singing a new song!
