SAND SPRINGS, OK -- Johnny Deaton is used to making split second decisions. So when Oklahoma State offered the Sand Springs quarterback a scholarship, he took it and ran with it.
"It pumped me up to be their first recruit," Deaton said. "It made me feel important."
Deaton rushed and passed for more than 1,500 yards last season, had 30 total touchdowns and is the Pokes first commitment of the 2010 recruiting class.
"I'm not going to let my head get caught up in the recruiting process anymore," Deaton said. "I'm going to take the calls but let it go as it is."
Deaton's great running and passing ability sold the Cowboys, so what sold the Sand Springs junior? The possibility of playing right away.
"It mostly had to do with me getting a chance to start pretty soon and not having to wait three years for my chance to shine," Deaton said. "There's no place in the nation that I'm going to have a chance to play that quick."
Deaton says the newly renovated Boone Pickens Stadium also played a part.
"It's like going into an NFL stadium -- it's insane," Deaton said. "That was probably the biggest factor."
And he's looking forward to taking more than one into the endzone.
"I can see myself running a few in," Deaton said.
