EL RENO, OK -- An El Reno girl is making it her mission to protect the police dogs in her town.

Eight-year-old Vicky Galindo needs to raise more than $1,000 to buy bullet-proof vests for the two dogs.

She got the idea to help while reading a book shortly after she lost her own dog in an accident.

"It was about this 11-year-old girl who put Chinese containers in stores and raised enough money to buy five bullet-proof vests," Vicky said.

"It's actually pretty heartwarming," El Reno Police Officer Chris Leal said. "We haven't had anyone come out to try and do something like that for us before."

Vicky has recruited her school and local businesses to help raise the money.

She and her mother have donation cans in locations all around El Reno. So far, they've raised about $500.
