Tulsa Zoo Celebrates Brown Bear's Birthday

TULSA, OK -- Yukon the Brown Bear celebrated his 28th birthday on Saturday at the Tulsa Zoo.

Lots of people visited the zoo to wish Yukon a happy birthday and watch him open his grizzly gifts and eat his special birthday cake.

Yukon was born February 2, 1981, at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA. He arrived to the Tulsa Zoo on August 3, 1985.

Yukon weighs more than 1,300 pounds.

Brown Bear Facts:

  • Males can reach a standing height of more than 10 feet and weigh up to 1,500 pounds.
  • Females are 20% - 30% smaller than males.
  • Cubs are born in January or February, usually 2-3 cubs, weighing only a pound at birth. Cubs stay with their mother for 2-3 years.
  • Average life spans in wild = 25-30 years, in captivity 30-40 years.
