TULSA, OK -- In these strained economic times, folks are trying the stretch every dollar and get as much value as they can. Here's an idea: a houseboat that doubles as a travel trailer.

"We make all our own cabinets, trim and crown, everything we make here in the shop," said Milford McGuire with StarLite Houseboats.

McGuire and his company have been building houseboats in West Tulsa for a couple of years. He says about one third of their clients sell their homes and live on houseboats fulltime.

The houseboats have granite countertops, a full sized refrigerator and other appliances. There are big houseboats and small ones.

"The reason we came up with this one on the trailer was we had dealers in Romania and Holland and India asking if we could build one small enough to put on a trailer," said McGuire.

Customers overseas wanted something they could more easily move from place to place, from the river to the campground, to the lake. It is 8 foot wide, 30 foot long. When it's on its trailer, it is street legal.

"It'll be under 13 and a half feet tall, weigh around 10,000 pounds and you can pull it with a 3/4 ton pick-up," said McGuire.

It is all electric, no propane. It has a backup generator system, central heat and air, with lots of extra storage space under the floor. It has the RV hookups on the outside, so you can plug it in.

"This is the Aqua-Terra, the houseboat, RV, travel trailer," said McGuire.

This new concept in houseboats will be on display at the Tulsa Boat Sport and Travel Show, the first week of February.
