TULSA, OK -- The 13th-ranked Tulsa men's tennis team jumped out to a 3-2 lead but was unable to hold on, losing 4-3 to No. 2 Texas on Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Tulsa used two gritty doubles performances to grab the early 1-0 lead. No. 4-ranked Arnau Brugues and Philip Stephens fought from a 5-4 deficit to defeat Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico, 8-6, in No. 1 singles. Tulsa's duo of Alberto Sottocorno and Ashley Watling went to extra frames to knock off Texas' Miguel Reyes Varela and Jon Wiegland, 9-7, in the No. 3 position.
Arnau Brugues, ranked No. 10 in the nation, defeated 31st-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, and 92nd-ranked Philip Stephens won 7-5, 6-2, over 84th-ranked Olivier Sajous in the No. 3 slot to give Tulsa the 3-2 team advantage.
However, Victor Kolik couldn't get past Ed Corrie in No. 2 singles losing 5-7, 6-4, 1-6, and Ross Cunningham was unable to hold on against Josh Zavala in No. 6 singles in the final and decisive match of the day falling 7-6 (7), 3-6, 3-6.
Tulsa returns to action on January 24 to take on Oral Roberts and Lamar in a double-header at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
